Do you want to enjoy a great homemade breakfast that will keep you satisfied through lunch for only $5? I know where it is.
Ruth’s Diner is located up Emigration Canyon, tucked up behind the zoo and the University of Utah. It’s a locals favorite because everything on the menu is amazing, but seating is limited. The winters in particular are a little tight since the patio is closed and everyone has to snag a table inside the converted train car that makes up most of the restaurant.
Dining there with kids is a bit of a challenge since there isn’t a lot of space and any noise just echoes around and bothers everyone. So, when we moved up to this area, we were happy to discover that Ruth’s can do carryout order for any of their food which means we still get to enjoy the meatloaf and the burgers and the mac ‘n’ cheese but we don’t have to pack the kids up and haul them anywhere.
BEST OF ALL: you can do carryout for breakfast from Ruth’s Diner, including their amazing $5 Early Bird Special.
If you can get yourself (or a member of your household *cough*Kyle*cough*) out and up the canyon between 8-9 am, you can take advantage of this great deal. Each breakfast comes with two pancakes, eggs, turkey sausage, bacon, hasbrowns, an orange slice, and one of Ruth’s famous mile-high biscuits (as seen on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives). We usually get a small side of country gravy and keep the biscuits for lunch since nobody can eat this much breakfast food.
It’s all very delicious – particularly the hashbrowns and the biscuits. In all honesty, it’s probably best if you park at the bottom of the canyon and then bike up to get breakfast because then you will have burned off all the calories. I, of course, have never done this but I do occasionally drive up to pick up boxes of breakfast so we can drive down the hill to This is the Place park and have a little picnic before the park opens. Eva runs off her breakfast calories and I sit in the sunshine and think about how I should really run off my breakfast calories and then I usually sneak pieces of pancake off of Eva’s plate. Don’t be like me.
Remember: this deal is only good between 8 and 9 am and you have to specifically order the Early Bird Special! You can get breakfast from Ruth’s for a couple of hours after that, though, and pretty much everything on the menu is amazing. A great option if you’re looking for breakfast on the go!
