One month from today we’ll be riding Disney’s Magical Express to Walt Disney World for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration!
It’s the first time I’ve been invited to the conference and I’m getting very excited. I’d be over the moon if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m ditching Kate for the Tink half-marathon and we’re leaving the kids for the first time ever.
The kids thing is tough…and not just because of Eva’s allergies. We’ve spent two nights away from Eva in her lifetime but we’ve never spent a night where we were both away from Calvin and even with Eva’s sleepovers we were only ever 20 minutes away. The idea of flying across the country to be away from them for three nights in a row is a little overwhelming and if you add in the fact that we’re going to WDW and they’d probably love another trip to WDW and we’re only not taking them because it’s so much harder to travel with kiddos…yea, we’re sort of winning the rotten parents award.
The really fun thing about the Disney Social Media Moms Conference is that kids are totally invited. They have all sorts of family events planned to compliment the actual blogger stuff so most people are using the celebration to make it an extra special Mother’s Day weekend. We thought about it, but we don’t want the kids to think that going to WDW is something we can do all the time and since we were just there for two weeks that’s a little much. Plus, Eva’s allergies do make traveling about 300% more difficult and Calvin makes life in general 300% more difficult. Since this is my first time attending the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, I want to be able to focus on taking it all in, meeting as many people as possible, and enjoying this incredible invite-only experience. Makes sense, right?
So what is the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration?
The celebration is sort of a blog conference and sort of a media event for influencers. I’m pretty sure the vast majority of people who get the invite are bloggers, but there might be people who are more influential on YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. so I can’t say that we’ll all be people who have sites like mine. Part of the purpose of the event is the same as most blog conferences: we learn how to make our sites better, we have the opportunity to meet sponsors, and we enjoy spending some face-to-face time with our online friends. The other side of the event is a media celebration that gives Disney the opportunity to share their work with a captive audience of media people. This means that we get sneak peeks, Disney meals, and the chance to have fun in the parks on our own.
How do you get invited to DisneySMMC?
I have no idea.
OK, that’s not true. I just can’t give you a set formula. I can tell you that you need to have an influence somewhere, whether that’s on your blog or your podcast or your Instagram account, etc. It’s not enough to really, really like Disney. I don’t even know how much really liking Disney factors into it. I know that a lot of the people who are going this year seem to really like Disney and it would make sense that their readers really like Disney (so that’s a solid investment for Disney to bet on that influencer) but there are also people coming who have never been to WDW before and don’t seem to take Disney vacations very often in general.
You do not have to be a mom to come, either, since I know people who aren’t parents that got the invite and there’s going to be at least a handful of dads in the mix. (There will be other dads floating around doing the same thing that Kyle is doing, but I mean there are dads who specifically got the invite.) Since it’s invite-only and it’s a fairly small group who get the invite and I’ve wanted to go for years, I’m ecstatic at having been invited but I can’t tell you the super secret thing I did to get in because there wasn’t one. If I had to give you three tips, I would say (A) attend a Disney Social Media Moms On-the-Road Celebration to get yourself on the radar, (B) keep posting great content, and (C) remember that if you want to be the kind of blogger who works with Disney, you need to be the kind of blogger who works with Disney. Keep it family-friendly, people!
What will you be doing at Disney SMMC 2015?
I have no idea.
Ok, I lied again. The truth is that I don’t have specifics but I know for a fact that I’m going to eat amazing meals, hear great content, hug a bunch of friends (old and new!), and basically float around on a three day blogger high. I know this because I’ve been reading recaps from past years and that’s the name of the game at this celebration.
The actual details haven’t been released, but since we’ll have a bit of free time I also know that Kyle and I will be enjoying a second honeymoon with some fun Disney dining and a whole lot of running around the park sans children. I can’t even imagine a Disney park without kids. It’s going to be gleeful. It’s going to be joyous. It’s going to be 5 seconds of missing their cute faces followed by 5 hours of Nirvana because NO STROLLER PARKING EVERRRRRRR!!
Oh and we’re staying at Yacht Club, which is my first time at that resort, so if any Disney veterans have tips or must-dos I want to hear them!
Who else is going to be at the 2015 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration?
Influencers who make awesome content like this (pssst – these are good examples if you’re wondering what kinds of posts get people that golden ticket invite!!):
