Our Night at the Discovery Gateway Bumble Bee Bash

We had such a blast this weekend at the Bumble Bee Bash fundraiser for Discovery Gateway. You might be familiar with the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum as one of the best family activities in Salt Lake City (or simply because I post about it all the time) but they’re also non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to early childhood education. The fundraiser gave us a chance to help support this great group while also having a ton of fun.

The theme this year was “Imagine What You Can Beecome!” which is just about the cutest thing ever because it combined a friendly bee theme with a lot of ways to support kids exploring different careers. There were a TON of silent auction baskets to bid on and they were all centered around local experiences that gave kids a behind-the-scenes peek at their dream job. We bid on the zookeeper, ballerina, engineer, and law enforcement baskets but were outbid. Next year!

There was a craft activity that let the kids decorate a headband proclaiming their dream job. Calvin wants to be a scientist and Eva wants to be a blogger mom. I think she might be selling herself a touch short but at the same time – my job is pretty awesome!

We bought tickets for the children’s spin wheel, which was stocked with a ton of great donated prizes. The kids won gift certificates, science kits, and zoo tickets before moving on to getting their faces painted and grabbing some appetizers.

It was rainy out but that didn’t stop our kids so Kyle and I were able to chat and relax (with our amazing bourbon lemonade concoctions) while they had free run of the helicopter. They love that thing so much that our family actually refers to Discovery Gateway as “the helicopter museum” instead of as the children’s museum so it was a huge deal that they had it all to themselves for a while. (Check out our homeschool unit on doctors if you aren’t familiar – it’s such a cute area!)

Once everyone was wet and cold enough we moved inside. The whole museum was open and they had extra bee-themed games for the kids to play. Calvin was in absolute heaven getting most of the activities to himself for a while. We’re working on those four year old social skills but honestly he just doesn’t share well right now so this was a dream. I just wish we’d had more time to explore because the museum offers so much!

Thank you, Discovery Gateway, for inviting us to your wonderful fundraiser! We had a great time and we’ll be back very soon, rain or shine!
