Red Butte Garden is a nature oasis on the University of Campus. There are miles of paved trails, a number of themed garden areas, and one of the best views of the valley available from the East bench.
The children’s area has a splash pad, although you need to be careful of the bee and wasp population in the summer because they’re attracted to the water, and there are constantly special events happening appropriate for families. Although the popular time to visit is in the Spring when all the flowers are blooming, there’s a lot to see and do year round and the lack of crowds in winter makes for a really nice outing.
The lower part of the gardens is home to the concert venue but it also has a beautiful rose garden and a pond with food available for the ducks and fish. There is no food available so either pack a picnic or walk over to the Natural History Museum of Utah to visit their cafe. There’s also a few great restaurants nearby at the hospitals (Primary Childrens, Huntsman Cancer, University of Utah) but parking over there is understandably crowded and most restaurants are closed outside of normal 9-5 business hours.
